Yes, often, when FDA-approved products are used by a trained, experienced injector. Common side effects (bruising, swelling, tenderness) are expected and usually resolve within days to a week or two. Serious complications are rare. Overall vascular occlusion incidence is estimated at 0.01 to 0.05% per treatment, with hyaluronic acid filler-specific rates of roughly 0.001 to 0.005%. The deciding factor for safety is injector experience and technique, not the product label.
Vascular occlusion is the accidental blockage of a blood vessel by injected filler. It can impede blood flow and cause tissue damage if not treated promptly. In a large 2021 JAMA Dermatology analysis, the rate was roughly 1 occlusion per 6,410 syringes with sharp needles. With blunt cannulas, the rate was 1 per 40,882 syringes. For hyaluronic acid filler directly, roughly 84% of vascular occlusion cases achieve partial or total recovery with prompt hyaluronidase treatment.
Look for board certification in dermatology or plastic surgery, or specialist injectable training for other medical practitioners. Look for years of hands-on experience and familiarity with the specific area being treated. Ask that hyaluronidase is kept on site, a clear complication protocol is in place, and risks are discussed openly rather than brushed off. Avoid injectors who deflect credential questions, who refuse to discuss complications, or who book treatment on the same visit without a proper consultation.
Severe or disproportionate pain. Sudden skin colour changes (blanching, dusky or mottled appearance). Bruising far beyond the injection site. Delayed capillary refill. Any visual symptoms such as blurred vision or eye pain. These require urgent attention from your injector or an emergency service, not a wait-and-see approach. Normal expected effects (mild bruising, swelling, tenderness) that settle within a week or two are not warning signs.
