Types of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART): Costs, Benefits, and Your Path to Parenthood in India

Around 48 million couples worldwide face infertility, says the WHO. If you're looking into types of assisted reproductive technology, you're not alone. India offers ART treatments like IVF, IUI, and ICSI. Costs are 50–70% less than in Australia, the UK, or Nigeria.

This guide covers what ART means and the main types. It shows real costs and how Divinheal helps patients from Australia, the UK, and Nigeria find top Indian fertility clinics.

What Is the Meaning of Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART)?

ART Meaning: How Assisted Reproduction Works

Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) is a set of medical steps. They help people have a baby. Eggs, sperm, or embryos are handled outside the body. The ICMR says ART covers any treatment where eggs and sperm are handled in a lab.

Here's how it works. Doctors collect eggs and sperm. They bring them together in a lab. Then the embryo is placed into the uterus. The aim is to get past whatever is blocking natural conception — blocked tubes, low sperm count, or unknown causes.

There are several types of ART. Each one solves a different problem. The most common are IVF, IUI, and ICSI. IVF stands for In Vitro Fertilisation. IUI is Intrauterine Insemination. ICSI stands for Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection. Your fertility doctor picks the best one for your age, diagnosis, and health history.

Who Can Benefit from ART?

ART can help the two men and women. For women, it treats blocked tubes, PCOS, or endometriosis. PCOS is a hormone issue that stops eggs from releasing. Endometriosis is when tissue grows outside the uterus. For men, ART helps with low sperm count, poor sperm movement, or blockages.

Single people and same-sex couples also use ART. People whose fertility has decreases with age. India's clinics support several family types. They offer donor eggs, donor sperm, and surrogacy. All of this follows the ICMR's Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act, 2021

Types of Assisted Reproductive Technology: 5 Main Options

India's top fertility centres offer five main types of assisted reproductive technology. Here's what each one does and who it suits best.

1. In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF)

IVF is one of the most commonly used ART methods. Doctors stimulate the ovaries to make multiple eggs. They collect the eggs in a short procedure. Then they fertilise the eggs with sperm in a lab. The best embryo is placed into the uterus. A 2023 study in Human Reproduction found IVF success rates in Indian clinics match global standards. Live birth rates are 35–45% per cycle for women under 35.

The 5 Stages of IVF

An IVF cycle follows five clear steps:

Stage

What happens

Duration

1. Ovarian stimulation

Hormone injections encourage the ovaries to produce several eggs instead of just one.

8–14 days

2. Egg retrieval

A thin needle collects mature eggs from the ovaries under light sedation.

15–20 minutes

3. Fertilisation

Eggs and sperm are combined in the lab. ICSI may be used if sperm quality is low.

1 day

4. Embryo culture

Embryos develop in an incubator. Specialists monitor cell division and quality.

3–5 days

5. Embryo transfer

The strongest embryo is placed into the uterus using a thin catheter. No anaesthesia needed.

5–10 minutes

2. Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

IUI is an easier and less complicated treatment than IVF. In this procedure, doctor place washed, concentrated sperm into the uterus during ovulation. It works best for couples with unexplained infertility or mild male factor issues. Success rates are about 10–20% per cycle. The low cost makes it a good first step.

3. Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI)

ICSI is a special add-on to IVF for male factor infertility. In normal IVF, eggs and sperm are mixed together. In ICSI, the embryologist injects one healthy sperm directly into each egg. This helps when sperm count is very low or sperm don't move well.

Is Husband's Sperm Used in IVF?

Yes — in most IVF and ICSI cycles, the husband's own sperm is used. If he has viable sperm, that's always the first choice. TESA (testicular sperm aspiration) or micro-TESE can get sperm even when none shows in the ejaculate. Donor sperm is only used when the male partner has no viable sperm. It's also used for single women and same-sex couples. All donor screening follows strict ICMR protocols.

4. Frozen Embryo Transfer (FET)

FET uses embryos made and frozen in a past IVF cycle. You skip ovarian stimulation and egg retrieval. That makes FET easier on the body and cheaper. A 2022 study in Fertility and Sterility found FET success rates match — or sometimes beat — fresh transfers. The uterine lining has more time to thicken.

5. Egg Donation, Sperm Donation, and Surrogacy

In some cases, a person's own eggs or sperm may not work, so Donor eggs or sperm offer another way. Egg donation helps women with early ovarian failure or poor egg quality. Sperm donation helps single women and couples with severe male infertility. Surrogacy is regulated by India's Surrogacy (Regulation) Act, 2021. A gestational carrier carries the baby. The law allows altruistic surrogacy for married Indian couples.

Benefits of ART: Why Patients Choose Assisted Reproduction

The benefits of ART go way beyond helping couples get pregnant. Here are the main reasons millions of people around the world choose assisted reproduction.

Achieving Parenthood After Infertility

After struggling with unexplained infertility for three years. Amina from Lagos decided to try IVF after two unsuccessful IUI cycles. She travelled  to Delhi for IVF through Divinheal. Her first cycle worked. She gave birth to a healthy boy seven months later. ART turns years of waiting into a clear medical plan with real success rates

Genetic Screening and Disease Prevention

Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) helps doctors check embryos for genetic problems before they are transferred. PGT-M is used to detect  single-gene conditions like sickle cell disease or cystic fibrosis. PGT-A looks for chromosome issues that cause miscarriage. A 2021 study found PGT-A can raise live birth rates by 10–15% in women over 37. It picks chromosomally normal embryos to do this.

Expanding Family-Building Options

ART has opened new possiblities for people to build families in ways that were not possible before. Single individuals can choose donor sperm or eggs, while Same-sex couples can also start families through donor option and surrogacy where allowed. Women who freeze eggs in their 20s or 30s can have a baby later, on their own timeline. These options didn't exist a generation ago.

James and Oliver from Melbourne used a donor egg programme at a Divinheal partner clinic in Mumbai. James recalls: "We'd been told by three clinics in Australia that the wait for a donor was 18 months. Through Divinheal, we were matched within six weeks." Their daughter is now two.

Why India Offers High-Quality ART at Lower Costs

Lower treatment costs in India don't mean lower quality. In fact, several factors keep prices affordable like - lower hospital running costs are lower. The government helps fund medical infrastructure. India also has a large pool of well-trained doctors. Many Indian fertility clinics hold NABH accreditation (National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers) — India's version of JCI. This requires regular audits, outcome reports, and patient safety checks.

Rachel from London paid £7,200 for one IVF cycle in the UK. It failed. She then came to India via Divinheal. She completed two full cycles — including medicines and genetic testing — for less than her one UK cycle had cost. Her second Indian cycle worked.

Risks and How Clinics Manage Them

ART is generally safe, but there are some risks. One risk is Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS). This is when the ovaries react too strongly to stimulation drugs and swell. It affects about 1–5% of IVF patients (Fertility and Sterility, 2020). Modern clinics lower this risk by adjusting doses carefully. Multiple pregnancies — twins or triplets — are also a concern. Most top Indian clinics now use single embryo transfer to reduce this risk.

At NABH-accredited clinics give you a dedicated patient coordinator. This person books your appointments. They explain your tests and results in plain language. They stay reachable by phone or WhatsApp during your stay.

Planning Your ART Treatment Trip to India

Most IVF plans need a 2 to 4 week stay in India. Here's what patients from each country need to know.

Australia: Apply for an Indian e-Medical Visa online. You'll need a letter from your Indian clinic confirming treatment. Direct flights from Sydney or Melbourne to Delhi take about 12 hours. Most patients plan a 3-week stay.

UK: Direct flights from London to Delhi run 8–9 hours. Your e-Medical Visa usually takes 3–5 business days to process. A 2–3 week stay covers tests, the procedure, and early follow-up.

Nigeria: Apply for your medical visa early — processing times can vary. Flights from Lagos to Delhi connect through Dubai or Addis Ababa (total 12–15 hours). Plan for a 3–4 week stay to allow time for consultations and any travel delays.

Recovery and Post-Treatment Care

After egg retrieval, most women feel mild cramping or bloating for 1–2 days — like period pain. IUI recovery is almost immediate. After embryo transfer, you'll rest for a few hours at the clinic, then go back to your hotel. Most clinics ask you to stay in India for 10–14 days after transfer for a pregnancy blood test.

Once you're home, Divinheal sets up virtual follow-up calls with your Indian specialist. If you need more care, your fertility doctor writes a detailed medical summary. Your local GP can use this to manage any issues.
