OVERVIEW

Overview of Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

A breast lift is designed to correct breast ptosis (sagging) caused by factors like aging, pregnancy, breastfeeding, significant weight fluctuations, and gravity. The procedure aims to lift the breasts, improve their shape, and reposition the nipple and areola to a higher, more youthful position. DivinHeal connects you with top-tier plastic surgeons in India, ensuring exceptional results and a safe, supportive experience.

PROCEDURE

A breast lift (mastopexy) typically involves several steps performed under general anesthesia. 1. Anesthesia: General anesthesia ensures you are comfortably asleep during the entire procedure. 2. Incision: The surgeon makes incisions based on the degree of lift required and the patient's anatomy. Common incision patterns include: Periareolar (Donut Lift): Around the areola only, suitable for minimal sagging. Lollipop (Vertical Lift): Around the areola and extending vertically down to the breast crease, for moderate sagging. * Anchor (Inverted T Lift): Around the areola, vertically down to the crease, and horizontally along the breast crease, for significant sagging. 3. Tissue Reshaping & Lifting: The surgeon removes excess skin, repositions the nipple and areola to a higher, more youthful position, and reshapes the remaining breast tissue to create a firmer, more lifted contour. In some cases, the areola size may be reduced. 4. Suturing: The skin is then redraped and closed with sutures to secure the new breast shape. Deep sutures are often used to provide internal support. External sutures may be absorbable or require removal. 5. Dressings & Compression: After closing the incisions, sterile dressings are applied, and a surgical bra or compression garment is placed to minimize swelling and support the newly reshaped breasts.

BENEFITS

Benefits of a Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

  • Improved Breast Shape & Contour

Restores a more youthful, perkier, and aesthetically pleasing breast silhouette.

  • Elevated Nipple Position

Nipples and areolas are repositioned to a more natural and higher location on the breast mound.

  • Increased Self-Confidence

Patients often report enhanced self-esteem and body image due to improved breast aesthetics.

  • Better-Fitting Clothing

Allows clothing and bras to fit better and more comfortably.

  • Correction of Asymmetry

Can address and improve mild to moderate breast asymmetry.

  • Long-Lasting Results

While not entirely immune to future changes, the results of a breast lift are generally long-lasting.

RECOVERY

Breast Lift Recovery Time and Tips

  • Immediate Post-operative Care (1-2 Weeks)

After your breast lift surgery, you will experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort, which can be managed with prescribed pain medication. You'll typically wear a surgical bra or compression garment continuously to support the breasts and minimize swelling. Drains may be placed temporarily. Most patients can return to light, non-strenuous activities within 1-2 weeks.

  • Mid-term Recovery (2-6 Weeks)

Stitches are usually removed within 1-2 weeks, or absorbable sutures dissolve on their own. Swelling and bruising will gradually subside. You should continue to avoid heavy lifting, strenuous exercise, and any activities that could strain the chest area. Your surgeon will advise when you can resume light exercise, usually around 3-4 weeks.

  • Long-term Recovery & Results (3-6 Months)

It can take several months for all swelling to fully resolve and for the final breast shape to settle. Scars will be red and raised initially but will fade and flatten over time. Protecting scars from sun exposure is crucial for optimal healing. Most patients feel fully recovered and can resume all normal activities, including vigorous exercise, by 6 weeks to 3 months. The final results of your breast lift will become apparent over several months.

  • Recovery Tips for a Smooth Process

    • Follow all post-operative instructions carefully.
    • Wear your support bra as directed.
    • Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities.
    • Get plenty of rest.
    • Maintain a healthy diet and stay hydrated.
    • Avoid smoking, as it impairs healing.
    • Keep incisions clean and dry.
    • Attend all follow-up appointments.

WHAT WE TREAT

Conditions Treated by Breast Lift

  • Sagging Breasts (Ptosis)

Breast lifts effectively treat various degrees of breast ptosis, where breasts have lost their firmness and shape, often appearing deflated or 'fallen'.

  • Nipple & Areola Repositioning

The procedure repositions the nipple and areola that have dropped below the breast crease, ensuring they are centered and appropriately oriented on the new breast mound.

  • Breast Asymmetry

For individuals with unevenly sagging breasts, a breast lift can help create more symmetrical and balanced breast contours.

  • Loss of Breast Volume & Shape

While primarily a lifting procedure, it can be combined with breast augmentation (implants) to restore lost volume alongside lifting and reshaping.

PREPARATION

Preparing for your breast lift is crucial for a smooth procedure and recovery. Your DivinHeal care coordinator will guide you through each step. 1. Medical Evaluation: Undergo a thorough medical examination, including blood tests and possibly a mammogram, to ensure you are a suitable candidate for surgery. 2. Medication Review: Discuss all medications, supplements, and herbal remedies you are taking with your surgeon. You may need to stop certain medications (e.g., blood thinners, aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs) weeks before surgery. 3. Smoking Cessation: If you smoke, you must stop several weeks before surgery, as smoking significantly impairs healing and increases complication risks. 4. Alcohol Restriction: Avoid alcohol for at least a week before surgery. 5. Dietary Guidelines: Follow any specific dietary instructions from your surgeon. Avoid eating or drinking anything after midnight on the night before surgery. 6. Arrange for Support: Arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery and assist you during the initial recovery period. 7. Comfortable Clothing: Wear loose, comfortable clothing on the day of surgery, especially a button-up top that doesn't require lifting your arms. 8. Personal Hygiene: Shower with an antibacterial soap the night before and the morning of surgery as directed.

RISKS

As with any surgical procedure, a breast lift carries potential risks and complications, although severe complications are rare. 1. Infection: Though rare, infection at the incision sites is possible. 2. Bleeding/Hematoma: Accumulation of blood under the skin, potentially requiring drainage. 3. Scarring: While scars are inevitable, they typically fade over time. Hypertrophic or keloid scarring can occur. 4. Changes in Nipple Sensation: Temporary or permanent changes in nipple and breast sensation, including numbness or hypersensitivity. 5. Asymmetry: Slight differences in breast shape, size, or nipple position between the two breasts. 6. Poor Wound Healing: Risk increases with smoking or certain medical conditions. 7. Anesthesia Risks: Adverse reactions to general anesthesia. 8. Seroma: Accumulation of fluid under the skin, which may require drainage. 9. Nipple Necrosis: Rare but serious complication where the nipple tissue dies due to insufficient blood supply. 10. Unsatisfactory Aesthetic Outcome: The results may not fully meet aesthetic expectations, though revisions are possible.
