The primary goal of a cardiac MRI is to evaluate heart structure, tissue health, and blood circulation with high precision. It works by aligning hydrogen nuclei in body tissues using a magnet and detecting radiofrequency signals as the nuclei return to baseline. Belonging to non-invasive diagnostic cardiology, it delivers clear anatomical and functional assessments to guide patient treatment plans.

The patient lies supine on the scanner bed with ECG leads placed on the chest to monitor heart rhythm. An intravenous line is established if contrast or stress medication is required. The bed moves into the cylindrical magnet bore. The technician instructs the patient to hold their breath for 10 to 15 seconds at intervals while radiofrequency signals capture images synchronized with the heartbeat. The procedure lasts between 30 and 60 minutes.

Severe adverse events like nephrogenic systemic fibrosis are extremely rare and mitigated by pre-scan kidney function screening.

On procedure day, the patient lies on a motorized table inside the MRI scanner while electrocardiogram leads monitor heart rhythms.
