Flow Cytometry is a laboratory technique that rapidly analyzes cells or particles as they flow in a fluid stream. It's instrumental in immunophenotyping, detecting abnormal cell populations, and assessing minimal residual disease. A Bone Marrow Biopsy involves taking a small sample of bone marrow (liquid and solid) to examine cell morphology, cellularity, and genetic abnormalities. PROCEDURE

Bone Marrow Biopsy Procedure Details

  1. The patient lies on their side or stomach.
  2. The skin over the posterior iliac crest (hip bone) is cleaned with an antiseptic solution.
  3. A local anesthetic is injected to numb the skin and the bone surface.
  4. A small incision is made, and a biopsy needle is gently inserted through the bone.
  5. For the aspirate, a syringe is attached to the needle to draw out a small amount of liquid bone marrow. This may cause a brief, sharp pain.
  6. For the core biopsy, the needle is advanced further to obtain a small cylindrical piece of bone and marrow.
  7. The needle is removed, pressure is applied to the site, and a sterile bandage is placed.
