A multi-organ transplant program is a specialized surgical intervention designed to treat complex end-stage organ failure across multiple anatomical systems. The primary goal is to restore normal organ function, correct severe metabolic or vascular disruption, and improve overall survival. PROCEDURE

Multi-organ transplantation begins with donor organ retrieval and careful cold ischemia management. In the operating room under general anesthesia, surgeons create surgical incisions to access target organs. The native diseased organs are carefully dissected and excised. Healthy donor organs are positioned, and surgeons execute vascular anastomoses to connect donor arteries and veins to the recipient's circulatory system. Biological conduits, such as ureters, bile ducts, or intestinal segments, are meticulously reconnected. After verifying organ perfusion and blood flow, the surgical site is closed, and the patient is transferred to the intensive care unit.

Full functional recovery and return to daily activities typically take 6 to 12 months, depending on initial organ health and individual response.

RISKS

Surgical risks include severe bleeding, arterial or venous thrombosis, primary graft non-function, and vascular or ductal anastomotic leaks. Early immunologic risks involve hyperacute or acute graft rejection. Long-term risks associated with lifelong immunosuppression include increased susceptibility to opportunistic viral, bacterial, and fungal infections, nephrotoxicity, secondary malignancies such as post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD), metabolic disturbances like post-transplant diabetes, and cardiovascular complications.

JOURNEY

The multi-organ transplant journey begins with an extensive multidisciplinary evaluation to determine candidate eligibility and match donor tissue. Once a compatible donor is identified, the surgical phase involves removing diseased native organs and implanting the healthy donor organs under continuous physiological monitoring. Following surgery, patients spend several weeks in intensive care and specialized inpatient units for organ monitoring and immunosuppressive dosing.
